My thoughts on texting in social situations differ depending on the social situation. If you're talking one on one with another person or expected to reply, I think that it would be rude to continue texting. However, if the situation includes a large group of people, it would be appropriate to continue texting. This is because in a large group, the conversation isn't always going to be addressed to you.
2. Would you find it rude if you're talking to somebody and they proceed to text continuously on their cell phone?
Yes, I would find it rude if a person continued to text as I was trying to have a conversation with them.
When I speak to a person, I give them my full attention and expect the same in return. If a person is texting as I speak to them, I am not receiving their full attention. I'd feel that they are being distracted as we talk or maybe are more focused on whoever they're texting.
3. If you had to come up with a list of five etiquette rules for texting, what would they be?
- Put your phone away as your speaking to someone to ensure that they have your full attention.
- Let who you're texting know that you are not able to text at the moment if you are speaking to someone else. This way, they won't continue to distract you or wonder why you haven't replied.
- Try to keep things polite over texting even though you may be joking. The reader of your text might read it differently than you were going for and a problem may be created.
- If a person isn't available, don't continue to bother them with a series of texts.
- An exception to texting during conversations is when the conversation is not being addressed to you.
